Trusting in God’s Timing

River Judah at 14 Weeks' GestationLast year, my husband and I found out we were expecting our fifth child. This was a bit of a shock to us as we were not planning on expanding our family further, and it took some time to adjust to the idea of five children. It did not, however, take long to fall in love with this new and unexpected blessing.

The planning and dreaming of life with another child began to take place.

Then came the devastating news at our 14-week ultrasound; our baby no longer had a heartbeat. Our hearts were shattered.

The obstetrician wanted to do an immediate D&C, but we felt God calling us in a different direction. We felt Him whispering that we needed to go home and wait on His timing. If we chose the route of a D&C, we would never see our baby outside of the black-and-white ultrasound images. We would never know the gender or what our child looked like. God was asking us to put our full trust in His timing.

For the next few weeks, we prayerfully waited for this baby to be born. On September 11, I went into labor naturally at home and gave birth to our fourth son, River Judah. Holding his precious, 14-week body in our hands left an imprint on our souls that will last a lifetime. River’s body — from his tiny little earlobes to his delicate little ankles to the detailed little fingers and toes — was so whole and perfect. I was able to watch his siblings hold their brother and tell River of their love. I witnessed my husband marvel over his son and whisper words of fatherly love over him.

Because we chose to wait on God’s timing and trust in His plan, we were able to witness one of God’s most precious designs. The unborn are fully human and so beautifully created. Psalm 139 has been carved into my heart since I laid eyes on River. “You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

My husband and I both feel led to share these photos of our son in hopes that they will show the precious and fragile humanity of unborn children.
