Athletes Take to the Courts

The weather was beautiful as more than 35 men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles teams took to the courts in the sixth annual Benefit for Life Pickleball Tournament at Belknap Park on Saturday and Sunday, August 4 and 5.

Athletes of all ages enjoyed competing in this sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong.

As the competitors play some tough matches, money is being raised to help continue Grand Rapids Right to Life’s prolife work in the community.

In the women’s doubles division:

  • 3.5 Gold – Cindy Roach & Heather Kettler
  • 3.5 Silver – Cheryl Lamport & Christine Kornoelje
  • 3.5 Bronze – Cathy Ciferri & Katie Peterson
  • 3.0 Gold – Robin Emrich & Amy Koetsier
  • 3.0 Silver – Vicki DeHaan & Laura Strob
  • 3.0 Bronze – Shelly Brenner & Cindy Rosema

In men’s doubles division:

  • 4.0 Gold – Todd Ponstein & Payton Ponstein
  • 4.0 Silver – Keith Wolverton & Minh Tran
  • 4.0 Bronze – John Schowalter & Frank Graves
  • 3.5 Gold – Josh Peacock & Dan Meyers
  • 3.5 Silver – Larry Phillips & Derek Schultz
  • 3.5 Bronze – Jeff VanderKolk & Jed Mulder

Mixed doubles was played on Sunday:

  • 3.5 Gold – Cheryl Lamport & Michael Carey
  • 3.5 Silver – Jeanne Schowalter & John Schowalter
  • 3.5 Bronze – Cindy Roach & Ron Glosser
  • 3.0 Gold – Sherry Velthouse & Jeff Velthouse
  • 3.0 Silver – Robin Emrich & John Emrich
  • 3.0 Bronze – Karen Koger & Jeffrey Koger
