Despite the weather forecast, more than 600 people still boarded 11 buses, hosted by Grand Rapids Right to Life, to travel from Michigan to Washington, DC, for the 46th annual March for Life.
Crowd estimates ranged from 500,000 to 600,000 marchers, who peacefully demonstrated against the U.S. Supreme Court decisions that legalized abortion-on-demand in all fifty states. Many in attendance commented that it was the largest march in years.
In a crowd-pleasing surprise, Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, Karen, spoke at the opening rally. At the end of his eloquent speech, he introduced President Donald J. Trump, who addressed the crowds via a live feed from the Oval Office.
“This is a movement founded on love and grounded in the nobility and dignity of every human life,” Trump stated. “When we look into the eyes of a newborn child, we see the beauty and the human soul and the majesty of God’s creation. We know that every life has meaning and that every life is worth protecting.”
In an unprecedented move, Trump further declared, “Today I have signed a letter to Congress to make clear that if they send any legislation to my desk that weakens the protection of human life, I will issue a veto.”
Other speakers at the rally included Ben Shapiro, editor-in-chief of The Daily Wire; Abby Johnson, founder of And Then There Were None; Dr. Alveda King, Director of Civil Rights for the Unborn with Priests for Life; and Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus.
