Crowd Marches to End Abortion

2024 March for LifeTens of thousands of people, not deterred by snow and frigid temperatures, marched in the nation’s capital at the 51st March for Life. Those present vowed to fight until abortion was unthinkable.

Grand Rapids Right to Life hosted 8 buses, transporting almost 450 people from Michigan to Washington, DC, for this annual event.

The opening rally featured House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA); Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family; Bishop Michael Burbidge, chair of the committee for prolife activities for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops; and former NFL player Benjamin Watson was introduced by Jim Harbaugh, head coach of University of Michigan football.

“Roe is done, but we still live in a culture that knows not how to care for life,” said Watson. “Roe is done, but the factors that drive women to seek abortions are ever apparent and ever increasing. Roe is done, but abortion is still legal and thriving in too much of America.”

This was the second March for Life since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that had legalized abortion-on-demand in all 50 states.

The theme for this year’s march was “With Every Woman, For Every Child,” which emphasized the need to care for both the mother and the child.

Jeanne Mancini, the president of the March for Life, explained that there is a “false narrative around abortion” that suggests abortion is “empowering and necessary.” She said this “fear-based messaging tries to convince women who are facing unexpected pregnancies that they’re alone, that they’re incapable, that they are ill-equipped to handle motherhood.”
