Claire Meulenberg, a senior at NorthPointe Christian High School, won the 2026 Grand Rapids Right to Life Senior Pro-Life Essay Scholarship. Meulenberg received a $500 scholarship and was nominated for Right to Life of Michigan’s statewide award, where she also placed first.
Applicants for the award were required to write an essay reflecting on how their character has grown throughout their journey as a young, pro-life advocate and how this has influenced their future goals.
In her essay, Meulenberg shared how she was prompted to live her pro-life convictions when one of her closest friends became pregnant at seventeen years old.
“Walking alongside my friend during her unplanned pregnancy changed me. I learned what it meant to advocate not just with words, but with presence, empathy, and unwavering support. I watched her courage unfold as a young mom who faced uncertainty, fear, and judgment, and I felt a deeper responsibility to defend both her and her child. Nine months later, she gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Seeing him, I finally understood who I had been advocating for all along. He is a living reminder that every life is made in the image of God, regardless of the circumstances. What mattered most was not how he entered this world, but how deeply he is loved.”
After graduation, Meulenberg plans to study political science at Samford University. Through this career path, she wants to advocate for moms and unborn children on the national level.
With many outstanding essays submitted, two students received an Honorable Mention award; Katelyn Smith, a senior at The Potter’s House High School, and Margaret Friederichs, a senior at West Catholic High School.
